Why Do Clean Sheets Feel So Good?

Nothing feels better than finally getting ready for bed after a long, busy day. Except for remembering that you did laundry that morning, and you’re not just getting into bed — you’re getting into a bed made with fresh, clean sheets.

It’s not just the peace of mind that comes from knowing your sheets are clean. Clean sheets just feel better. But why do clean sheets feel so good? And how often do you need to wash your sheets to have that cozy, clean sheet feeling as often as possible without wearing out your sheets?

They’re Better for Your Skin

Clean sheets may not immediately come to mind when you think about skincare, but they’re actually a crucial part of maintaining an even, breakout-free complexion. Consider that healthy adults should get around seven hours of sleep per night.

That’s an awful lot of time for your face to spend in contact with your pillow. And it’s not even just your face you have to worry about. Dirty sheets are a common cause of back acne

Throughout the night, you’re likely to sweat, drool, and shed skin, not to mention transfer all kinds of dirt and bacteria from your clothes or body onto your bedding. This shouldn’t cause a huge issue for you or your skin until all of these impurities build up on your sheets over time.

If you’re not washing your sheets frequently enough, you can end up with acne, breakouts, or plain old irritation and inflammation from repeated contact with dirty fabrics. In addition to washing your sheets regularly, you can reduce any irritation your sheets will cause to your skin between washes by avoiding wearing street clothes to bed, washing your face before you sleep, and showering in the evening.

They’re Better for Your Mental Health

At the beginning of this article, we mentioned that the peace of mind you get from clean sheets isn’t the only reason they feel so good. But it is definitely one of the reasons.

There’s lots of evidence that keeping your living space clean, orderly, and decluttered can have a positive impact on your mental health. You may have noticed that, in times of stress or pressure, you have the sudden urge to deep clean your entire living space — or at least rethink and reorganize it.

This may be because keeping your space clean can help you feel more in control of your life. Additionally, clutter can be stressful — as can an unfinished to-do list.

So clean sheets help you feel a little bit more on top of your life, and washing your sheets regularly may help you feel more relaxed in the evening because you know you’ve accomplished at least one necessary task.

This means that instead of getting into bed and immediately undoing all your efforts to wind down for the night by stressing about the last time you washed your sheets, you can snuggle into clean bedding and get to sleep faster.

They’re Better for Your Sleep Quality

Naturally, all of these factors combined mean that clean sheets feel good in no small part because they help improve the quality of your sleep in a variety of ways. But in addition to the above, clean sheets feel so good when you snuggle up into them because they do feel fresher.

As long as you follow the care instructions on your bedding, washing your sheets can refresh them to feel just as soft and snuggle-ready as when you first bought them. Plus, clean sheets smell better! And a pleasant scent can positively impact your mood, making your sheets feel better when they’re clean.

How Often Do You Need To Wash Your Sheets?

While you may be tempted to throw your sheets into the washer daily after reading these benefits, you might want to hold yourself back. Washing linens too frequently can cause them to wear more quickly.

So if you want that clean sheet feeling as often as possible, it’s probably best to have multiple sets of sheets you can rotate through so that you’re not putting one old reliable set through the wringer.

In general, you should wash your sheets about once a week. This timeframe decreases depending on individual factors, such as whether or not you sleep with a pet. If you do, it’s best to wash your sheets every three to four days, give or take, because as much as you love your furry friend, they’re probably not as clean as you’d hoped.

Changing your bedding more frequently is also a good idea if you have asthma, allergies, or even sensitive skin. In addition to feeling great, cleaning your sheets more regularly may actually soothe the respiratory symptoms of asthma and allergies. And as we discussed above, clean sheets are good for your complexion, too.

Even if you sleep alone and don’t experience allergies or skin sensitivities, there’s one other situation in which you’ll want to wash your sheets more frequently than just once a week: summertime.

If you live somewhere with warm weather, you’re likely to sweat more while you sleep, so you will need to launder your bedding more frequently to get that cozy, clean sheet feeling.

…But What About All That Laundry?

While the idea of clean sheets is always appealing, and you may agree with all of the amazing benefits clean sheets can provide to you and your sleep habits, one thing about clean sheets isn’t ideal: laundry.

There's no need to worry if your concern is environmental — all that potentially toxic detergent. Our Laundry Detergent Sheets are toxic-free, so they’re as gentle on your skin as they are on the planet. They also are packaged with zero waste or plastic and are ultra-concentrated, so they don’t take up much storage space.

If your concern is simply about the amount of time you have in a day, don’t worry. By switching out your dingy old sheets for a Miracle Made Sheet Set, you can reduce your laundry by up to 3x. This is because our sheets are infused with anti-microbial silver.

It sounds too good to be true, but silver can actually kill bacteria. Our sheets prevent up to 99.7% of bacteria growth. So you can keep that clean sheet feeling even longer between washes.

Takeaway

It’s not just you — clean sheets feel more comfortable than sheets that have been on your bed for a few days or even a couple of weeks. The peace of mind you get from knowing you’ve checked off the laundry box of your to-do list is part of that super-comfy feeling you get sliding between freshly laundered sheets.

But that's not all of it. There are other reasons why freshly cleaned sheets feel so dreamy, and they all mean that it’s easier for you to have some sweet dreams of your own
